Welcome to The Spine Clinic
Our spine doctor integrates all aspects of both surgical and nonsurgical specialized care by collectively combining their knowledge, experience, and expertise as the foundation of our Spine Clinic at Lakeshore Orthopaedics.
Our specialty-trained spine surgeon, Dr. Thomas Sylvester, has dedicated his practices to this specialized field of study. With his commitment to continued education through attending courses and actively learning the newest procedures and techniques, our specialist is the most highly skilled back, neck, and spine surgeon in the area.
Back pain is extremely common, affecting up to 80% of all individuals at some point in their lives. The causes of back pain are numerous and diverse. Back pain is often due to something minor, such as a simple muscle strain. However, it can also be due to something far more serious, such as spinal stenosis with compression of the spinal cord. Because the spine is so complex, back or neck pain that fails to improve with conservative measures should be evaluated by a doctor who specializes in the care of spinal disorders.
Our Spine Clinic at Lakeshore Orthopaedics is a team of medical professionals who specialize in the comprehensive care of spinal disorders, including low back pain, neck pain, and spinal pain that radiates into the arms and legs. At our Spine Clinic, our spine team works together to develop an individualized plan of care for each patient.
For the majority of patients with back or neck pain, the initial treatment is typically nonoperative. This usually consists of some combination of anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, and/or chiropractic care. Individuals who fail to respond to these initial measures may be candidates for spinal injections. Epidural steroid injections have been shown to be effective in providing pain relief in patients with back pain, sciatica, and spinal stenosis.
When patients fail to improve with conservative measures, surgery is sometimes considered. Dr. Sylvester is proficient in all of the most current techniques in back and neck surgery, including:
- Anterior and Posterior Approach to Lumbar Fusions
- Anterior Approach to Cervical Fusions
- Minimally Invasive Kyphoplasty for Spine Compression Fractures
- Minimally Invasive Microdiscectomy
- Minimally Invasive X-LIF Procedures and AxiaLIF Procedures for Lumbar Disorders
- Minimally Invasive X-STOP Procedures for Spinal Stenosis
